King Tewdrig

King Tewdrig was a Celtic King of Gwent with a history of success in battle. At some point in his reign, he abdicated in favour of his son Meurig in order to live a hermits life at Tintern

St Tewdric's Trail Overview

  • The Monmouthshire Countryside Service has devised the "Tewdrig Trail" following an 11 mile route from the Old Station at Tintern to Mathern village.
  • Along the way you will pass through the picturesque village of Tintern.
  • You will then travel along the stunning Angiddy valley with its industrial heritage including the Abbey Tintern Furnace and on to the battle site at Pont y Saeson.
  • There is then a steep climb up through an old sunken lane to eventually reach Gaer Hill Fort where you can enjoy fantastic views across to Flat Holm, the River Severn and the English coast line. From here it is down hill all the way!
  • You will pass Rogerstone Grange on the edge of St. Arvan's village and continue through fields, lanes and woodland to the charming hamlet of Mounton.
  • For the final section you will cross fields to the village of Pwllmeyric and continue past Tewdrig's Well to reach his resting place in Mathern Church.
  • More information is available on the "Circle of Legends" website at Visit Monmouthshire.
