Walk Description

Walk Description A lovely walk starting at the pretty village of Shirenewton with far reaching views across the River Severn and beyond. Wooded glades and a babbling stream.

Grade Moderate Only one climb Most of the route is easy walking along quiet lanes, although after heavy rainfall the paths maybe muddy particularly near the stream

Length approx 6.5 miles For accommodation and opportunities for refreshment view the section stay and eat for further details.

Shirenewton and Llanmellin Hillfort

  • Start at St Thomas a Becket Church and with your back to the church head downhill between the walls of Shirenewton Hall and Cae Pwc Cella House (The Field of the Goblin). Carry on down the road passing Home Farm on your left and keep going for about a mile until you reach the Old Cwm Mill noting the renovated mill wheel to the left of the building. Behind you on your left is Llanmellin Hill Fort
  • At the Mill turn right and along the valley with the Cas Troggy Brook on your right. The stream is unusual as as it has a tendency at low water levels to disappear into 'Sink holes' to emerge further downstream. Just before the large house the Cwm on your right by a small weir you can see the sluice that feeds the culvert that would have fed the mill downstream with the water to drive the water mill.
  • Passing the disused trout farm on your left crossing a stone bridge to a sign indicating a private road, climb the gate in the direction the finger post dictates ignoring the one pointing to Gray Hill. You will be walking parallel to the stream. Follow this line along an indistinct path following the brook upstream to Rock Cottage where the path has been diverted around the cottage and out on to a lane.
  • On reaching the lane turn right and follow the lane to the valley bottom and then head uphill. On your left you will see the Earlswood Valley Methodist Chapel that has the distinction of being the first Methodist Chapel in Wales.  Continue uphill on the lane ignoring the first lane on your left to a road junction.  turn right up the hill passing Chapel Farm on your left andcontinue on to Oxpool Farm on your left ignoring the path junctions on left and right. Follow the lane bearing left at a minor junction by Upper Argoed Farm.
  • Just beyond Upper Argoed Farm cross the stile on your right by a finger post and follow the way marked path along the edge of the field. On entering the 5th field you will see Mynders Farm across the field on your left. Turn left up the slope to the edge of the field to a stile on to the road. Across the road and slightly right head down the lane passing the waterworks on your left; in about 200 metres alongside a house take the path to your right crossing the fields and stiles to join the Shirenewton - Earlswood road and your route back to the village.
