Visit by 3 Japanese Professors 27th and 28th August 2015
Chepstow among several other UK towns are proud to be given the opportunity by the National Committee of Walkers are Welcome to act as Liaison Officers to assist 3 Japanese visitors, Professor Yuko Shioji of International Tourism at Hannan University Oska, Professor of Anthropology Keiji Maegawa of University of Tsukuba and Vice Director of Satoyama Research Centre Kyoto, on a Japanese Government funded tour of the UK researching walking tourism. This includes, Walking Festivals, maintenance of footpaths and landowners’ attitudes.
We had a very enjoyable two days showing them the delights of the Wye Valley and Chepstow in the sunshine and would like to thank those that gave up their time so readily. Peter Hands (The Speech House), Cadw, Fiona Wilton (Wye Valley & Forest of Dean Tourism Association), Chepstow Town Council Mayor Dale Rooke, Councillor Ned Heywood and Town Clerk Sandra Bushell who presented the visitors with 3 beautifully handcrafted mugs made by Ned. Ruth Rourke (MCC‘s Principal Countryside Access Officer)), Jont Bulbeck from Natural Resources Wales, Phil Mundell (Walk Leader and footpath pathcare volunteer), Phil Bell (Chepstow Racecourse), Tim Ryan (Town Guide), Mike Lewis (Green Man Back Packers’ Hostel) and Emelia Vonstaufer and Jonathan Wright (Language Assistants). With their generosity and the natural beauty of the Wye Valley and Forest of Dean our guests had a very enjoyable and worthwhile visit and are keen to develop a long lasting friendship.
