Following the popularity of the Pilgrimage Walk in CWF24, this route visits three different churches as well as one from last year’s selection. Starting and finishing at Devauden Green, site of John Wesley’s first sermon in Wales, we walk to the Church of the Holy Cross at Kilgwrrwg, taking a different route from last year, before climbing up and over the ridge to St Deniol’s Church at Itton. From there we cross a landscape rich in Roman history before arriving at St Arvan’s Church. Our final church destination is St Mary’s Church at Penterry, standing alone in fields, surviving a village laid waste by the black death plague. We return to the start to ancient hunting woods of the Normans.

The latest in the popular “Hidden Chepstow” series takes us on a gentle walk around a town centre that is no longer there! The talk reveals the amazing changes in this part of town and its previous identities, many of which are lost in the mists of time. But we will clear those mists! The walk is accompanied by illustrative folders with relative pictures/sketches/newspaper cutting etc, as far back at 1620. The walk leader was born in Chepstow over 70 years ago and likes to refer to this series of walks as “Hidden Chepstow” because much of it is anecdotal information not found in any guide-book.
The walk will start with an opportunity for refreshments (included) and a short visit to St Mary's Priory, hosted by Chepstow Priory Friends. Built in 1071, this is the resting place of Anne Boleyn’s lady in waiting and one of Charles I's executioners, and still in use today. We will then make the short but fascinating journey through time to the Town Gate. This walk is not suitable for dogs. Meeting location: Front entrance of St Mary's Priory, Upper Church Street, Chepstow NP16 5HA ///constrain.rainfall.fluid
Nelson Street car park (charges apply) is adjacent to St Mary's Priory. Public transport: St Mary's Priory and the Town Gate are a short walk from Chepstow bus and railway stations.
