This year’s dawn chorus walk takes place in Newport Wetlands National Nature Reserve where we hope to hear many common species in song plus the returning migrants from Africa fresh in after our long winter. Species may include Chiffchaff, Willow Warbler, Sedge and Reed Warbler, Common and Lesser Whitethroat. Other possibilities include Marsh Harrier, Bearded Tit, shouting Cetti’s Warbler, squealing Water Rail and with luck even booming Bittern. We will walk the perimeter of the reserve including the seawall with the hope of hearing a reasonable species list before making our way back to the Visitor Centre.

Although this walk follows the route of the disused Wye Valley Railway, it is really an excuse to enjoy the beautiful countryside of the Wye Valley. The railway opened in November 1876 and closed to passenger traffic in 1959, having been called one of the most scenic journeys in the country. Today’s walk begins in Chepstow and continues to the Old Station at Tintern, diverting round the now closed Tidenham tunnel. As a result, the first stretch includes a moderate climb but once at the far end of the tunnel we will walk on the original track bed and discover some of the original railway architecture.

This is a delightful walk starting in The St Bride’s Valley. The walk is steeped in history with 3 castles, the remains of the oldest dating back to at least AD 160. You will also pass the site of three murders, from the 5th century to modern times, and there are fabulous views across the Severn Estuary and to both Severn bridges. Option to eat at the Rock and Fountain on our return.

Who is not fascinated by the stars? In this 50th year since man landed on the moon we are joining Usk Astronomical Society and Monmouth Astronomical Research Society for a fascinating look at the night sky and recent developments in the world of space exploration. After a talk and opportunity for questions there will be a brief pause for refreshments then, weather permitting, we will pop outside where telescopes will be available to view the stars with help from the experts.
